First, Try the Wall Button

This one test tells you where to look. If the wall button opens and closes the door normally, the opener works and the problem is between the remote and the opener. If the wall button does not work either, skip ahead to our door won’t open guide.

Fix 1: Batteries and Lock Mode

Remote and keypad batteries die without warning, and Killeen heat inside a parked car shortens their life. Swap the battery first, it is the cheapest fix there is.

Next, look at the wall button. Many have a lock or vacation switch, and when it is on the opener ignores every remote and keypad. Kids, guests and move out cleaners turn it on more often than you would think. A blinking light on the wall button often means lock mode is active.

Fix 2: Reprogram the Remote

Openers forget remotes after some power surges, and some people clear the memory by accident. Reprogramming usually means pressing the learn button on the opener motor head, then pressing the remote button within about 30 seconds. The opener light blinks or clicks to confirm.

The exact steps vary by brand and age. Look for the learn button under the light cover or on the back of the motor head. When you move into a home, it is smart to clear the memory and reprogram only your own remotes so the last owner’s remotes stop working. That is common with PCS moves around Fort Hood.

Fix 3: Range Problems and LED Bulbs

If the remote only works when you are almost at the door, check three things. The battery. The antenna wire hanging from the motor head, which should hang straight down and not be wrapped up. And the light bulb in the opener.

Some LED bulbs give off radio noise that drowns out the remote signal. If your range dropped right after you swapped to LED bulbs in the opener, try an incandescent bulb or an LED made for garage door openers. This catches a lot of people.

Fix 4: Compatibility

Remotes are not universal across every opener. Newer openers use rolling code systems that older remotes cannot talk to, and some car built in buttons need an adapter for certain openers. If a new remote will not program no matter what, check that it matches your opener brand and its code system.

If your opener is very old and has no rolling code security, a new opener with modern remotes and battery backup may be the better fix. See our opener repair and installation page.

Still not working? If the remote and wall button both fail, or the opener clicks without running, the issue is the opener itself. Call (254) 325-2800. We are open 24/7.

Remote and Keypad FAQ

Still not sure what your door needs? Call and describe it. We can often tell you on the phone whether it’s the spring, the cable or the opener.

Why did my garage door remote suddenly stop working?

Most often a dead battery or lock mode switched on at the wall button. A power surge can also clear the opener memory, which means the remote needs to be reprogrammed.

Can LED light bulbs affect a garage door remote?

Yes. Some LED bulbs create radio interference that cuts the remote range. Try a different bulb in the opener and see if the range comes back.

How do I reset my garage door keypad?

Replace the keypad battery first. Then follow the reset steps for your brand, which usually involve the learn button on the opener and entering a new PIN on the keypad within a short time window.

Should I reprogram my remotes when I move into a new house?

Yes. Clearing the opener memory and adding only your own remotes means the last owner, renters or contractors cannot open your garage.

Will any universal remote work with my opener?

Not always. Rolling code openers need a compatible remote. Check the remote packaging for your opener brand and code type.

Moving Into a New House?

If you just moved in, erase the opener memory and reprogram your own remotes so old ones stop working. Military families on a PCS can find a move in and move out checklist on our page for Fort Hood families.
