Why We Put This Page Together
People ask us the same handful of questions that have nothing to do with springs or rollers. Do I need a permit for a new door? Does a garage door company need a license in Texas? What should I do about hail damage before I call my insurance? Where do I check the weather before a storm rolls in?
We are a repair shop, not a law office or an insurance agent, so the honest answer is to point you to the people who set the rules. Every link below goes to a government agency or the industry body that writes the standards. Rules change, so check the source before you rely on it.
Permits and Building Rules in Killeen
City of Killeen Building Inspections
The City says a permit is needed to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move or demolish a building or structure, and for electrical work. A straight swap of a door in the same opening is different from widening the opening or adding a new circuit. Call them at 254-501-7762 before structural work. Their office is at 100 E Avenue C, Killeen.
Harker Heights, Copperas Cove and Nolanville
Each city has its own building department and rules. If your home is outside Killeen city limits, check with that city, and with your HOA if you have one. Many HOAs in newer subdivisions have rules on door style and color.
Garage Door Opener Safety Rules
Federal law has required automatic residential garage door openers to have entrapment protection since the early 1990s. That is why your opener has safety sensors near the floor and reverses when it hits something. The rule is 16 CFR Part 1211, enforced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and it ties to the UL 325 safety standard.
In plain terms: never disconnect or bypass the sensors, and test the auto reverse once a month by closing the door on a 2×4 laid flat. If it does not reverse, stop using the opener until it is fixed. Our opener repair visits always end with this test.
Federal Register: Safety Standard for Automatic Residential Garage Door Operators
The CPSC rule update that references the current UL 325 requirements for openers sold in the US.
DASMA: Door and Access Systems Manufacturers Association
The industry group that publishes technical data sheets on garage door safety, wind load and spring care. Good for homeowners who want the details.
Licensing for Garage Door Work in Texas
Texas does not run a general contractor license, and the Department of Public Safety says that a company that only installs garage door openers or gate operators, and does no alarm or access control work, does not need a DPS license. Openers tied into an alarm system or that record entry and exit are different.
That means a license number is not the right test for a garage door company in Texas. Better questions: is there a real local address, will they give you a written price before work starts, do they carry insurance, and what do they warrant. Our About page covers how we answer those.

Hail, Wind and Insurance
Central Texas gets real hail. A dented garage door is one of the most common claims after a spring storm, and dents near the bottom panel can also make the door bind in the track. Take photos before anything is repaired, keep damaged parts if you can, and get a written estimate.
The Texas Department of Insurance has a plain language guide on filing a hail or wind claim. Be careful with storm chasers who knock on doors after a storm and ask for payment up front.

On Post Housing and Rentals
If you live in on post family housing at Fort Hood, report a broken garage door to the housing office first. They handle repairs on those homes and an outside company may not be allowed to work on them.
If you rent off post, tell your landlord or property manager first. Many leases say the owner arranges repairs. We are happy to work with property managers and can send the written price straight to them. Off post homes in Killeen, Harker Heights, Copperas Cove and Nolanville are in our service area.
Resource FAQ
Still not sure what your door needs? Call and describe it. We can often tell you on the phone whether it’s the spring, the cable or the opener.
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Killeen?
The City of Killeen requires permits for building alterations and electrical work. Whether a straight door swap counts depends on the job. Call Killeen Building Inspections at 254-501-7762 to confirm, especially if the opening size changes.
Does a garage door company need a license in Texas?
Texas DPS says a company that only installs garage door openers or gate operators, with no alarm or access control work, does not need a DPS license. Ask about insurance, a local address and a written price instead.
Will homeowners insurance pay for a hail damaged garage door?
It depends on your policy and deductible. Take photos, get a written estimate and read the Texas Department of Insurance guide on hail claims before you sign anything.
How often should I test my garage door auto reverse?
Once a month. Lay a 2×4 flat under the door and close it. The door should reverse when it touches the board.
