Signs Your Garage Door Rollers Are Worn

Rollers are the small wheels on stems that ride inside the vertical and horizontal tracks. Most 7 foot tall residential doors have 10 of them, five on each side. When the bearings wear out or the wheels crack, the door stops gliding and starts dragging. That extra drag strains the opener and the springs.

In our garage door roller replacement Killeen visits, these are the signs homeowners call about most:

  • A grinding or rumbling sound as the door travels
  • The door shakes or jerks at the same spot every time
  • Rollers that wobble or sit crooked in the track
  • Cracked, chipped or flat spotted wheels
  • Black dust or nylon shavings on the floor under the tracks
  • Bent roller stems after a car or trailer bumped the door

Quick check you can do

Close the door and pull the opener release only if the door is fully down. Look at each roller from inside the garage. A good roller sits straight and spins freely by hand. A bad one wobbles, sticks or has a visible crack. Do not touch the bottom brackets.

Not sure? Call and describe the sound. Our noisy door guide explains what grinding, popping and squealing usually mean.

Nylon or Steel Rollers: Which Fits Your Door

Roller choice changes how loud the door is and how long the rollers last. Builder grade doors in Killeen subdivisions often came with basic steel or plastic rollers. Swapping them for sealed bearing nylon rollers is one of the most noticeable upgrades for the price.

*Cycle ratings as listed in Creative Door’s steel vs nylon roller guide. One cycle is one open and one close. At four cycles a day, 10,000 cycles is close to seven years. A family that uses the garage as its front door runs more cycles than that, so rollers wear out sooner.

Stem length matters too. Most residential rollers use a 2 inch wheel on a 4 inch or 7 inch stem. We match the stem to your hinges and brackets so the roller sits at the right depth in the track.

Why the Bottom Rollers Are Not a DIY Job

The middle rollers come out through the hinges with the door closed. The bottom pair is different. They sit in the bottom brackets, and the lift cables attach to those brackets. With the springs wound, those cables are under the full weight of the door. Loosening the wrong bolt can release that tension at once and cause serious injury.

The top rollers sit in adjustable brackets that also set how tightly the door seals at the header. Moving them changes how the door closes. If you are replacing rollers yourself, stop at the middle ones and call for the top and bottom pairs.

If a bottom bracket is rusted or the cable is frayed, we replace those at the same time. Our cable repair page covers what a damaged cable looks like.

What Roller Replacement Involves

1. Whole door check

Before any parts come off, we test the balance, look at both cables, the springs, the hinges and the tracks. Worn rollers are often a symptom. A door out of balance or a bent track will chew through new rollers.

2. Door down, opener off

The door stays closed and the opener is disconnected while rollers are changed one section at a time.

3. Top and bottom brackets

The bottom brackets are handled with the spring tension accounted for. The top brackets are reset so the door closes snug against the header seal.

4. Track alignment

We check that the vertical tracks are plumb and the gap to the door is even. A track out of line makes new rollers bind.

5. Lubricate and test

Hinge pivots and roller bearings get a garage door lubricant. The tracks do not. Grease in a track collects dust and slows the rollers. Then we run the door, check balance, and test the opener force and auto reverse.

What Garage Door Roller Replacement Costs

National guides list rollers among the most common garage door repairs. HomeAdvisor puts the average garage door repair at about $264, with most jobs between $155 and $378.

Your price depends on how many rollers the door has, nylon or steel, and whether hinges, bottom brackets or cables also need replacing. You get the price in writing before we start. See our repair cost guide for how to read a quote.

Garage Door Roller Replacement Killeen FAQ

Still not sure what your door needs? Call and describe it. We can often tell you on the phone what’s wrong and what it should cost.

How often should garage door rollers be replaced?

It depends on the roller and how often the door runs. Nylon rollers with 10 ball bearings are rated for about 10,000 to 15,000 cycles. At four cycles a day that works out to roughly seven to ten years. Replace them sooner if the wheels crack, wobble or stop spinning freely.

Should I replace all the rollers at once?

Usually yes. They are the same age and wear at the same rate. Mixing new and worn rollers gives uneven travel. A single cracked roller after a car bump can be replaced on its own.

Will nylon rollers make my garage door quieter?

In most cases they are quieter than steel rollers. Noise can also come from a loose opener chain, dry hinges or loose hardware, so we check those during the same visit.

Can I replace garage door rollers myself?

The middle rollers can be changed through the hinges with the door closed and the opener unplugged. Leave the bottom rollers to a technician. Their brackets hold the lift cables under spring tension.

Will new rollers fix a door that came off track?

Not by themselves. A door that left the track needs the track and door realigned first. See off track garage door repair.
